Pool safety: design, equipment and habits

No structure replaces an adult's eyes. But it can make mistakes harder. This is what we build into the pools we make.

  • anti-slipliner on steps

Fence and gate

A fence round the pool with a self-closing gate is the most effective measure for small children. Clear glass options keep the view.

Safety cover

When the pool is not in use, a safety cover that carries weight and locks cuts off access to the water. Automatic slatted covers close at the press of a button.

In the pool

  • Anti-slip liner on steps and shallow areas.
  • Anti-entrapment suction covers, and two floor drains instead of one.
  • Depth markings on the coping.
  • Handrails on ladders.

Habits

One named adult watching the children whenever they are near the water, without a phone. Swimming lessons early. No head-first diving in a home pool. A ring buoy and a phone near the pool.
