The pool in winter: resting, not empty

Everyone asks first: 'do we drain it?'. No. A liner pool stays full in winter. The water holds the liner in shape and balances the ground around it.

Active or passive winter

In most of Greece we suggest an 'active' winter: the filter runs a few hours a day and disinfection stays low. In mountain areas or houses that close up, we prefer a 'passive' close with winterising chemicals and drained pipes.

Steps for closing

  1. Clean floor and walls.
  2. Adjust pH and shock with chlorine.
  3. Lower the level just below the skimmers if frost is likely.
  4. Fit the winter cover.
  5. Set the timer to a few hours, or drain the pipes for a passive close.

Opening in spring

Remove the cover, top up, backwash, set pH and chlorine and increase the running hours. If the pool was covered, the water is ready in a few days. Without a cover, expect more cleaning.
